Resource Base

At Guardian Angels, we believe that every child is created in the image and likeness of God. Our Autism Base curriculum is designed to nurture the unique God-given talents of every pupil, ensuring they feel loved, valued, and empowered to reach their full potential within our faith community.

Pre-Formal Pathway

Intent

The pre-formal curriculum provides an ambitious, inclusive, and highly personalised learning experience for pupils with profound and multiple learning difficulties and complex needs. We recognise each child as a unique gift from God; therefore, our curriculum enables all learners to make progress from their individual starting points, developing the knowledge, skills, and behaviours needed to engage with the world and their faith.

The curriculum prioritises communication, interaction, sensory processing, physical development, emotional regulation, and early independence. We aim to foster a sense of spiritual wonder, where learning is structured through meaningful, real-life experiences responsive to individual needs and motivators.

Implementation

The pre-formal curriculum is delivered through a learner-centred approach underpinned by Catholic values of love and patience. Planning is informed by a deep knowledge of each pupil’s needs and EHCP outcomes.

Learning is embedded within daily routines and multi-sensory activities. We incorporate "Sensory Prayer" and moments of reflection, allowing pupils to experience the peace of God’s presence.

Impact

The impact is seen in pupils’ engagement, well-being, and their ability to experience the joy of belonging. Progress is measured through increased responsiveness and small-step achievements. Pupils demonstrate growing confidence and a sense of self-worth, rooted in the knowledge that they are a cherished member of the Guardian Angels family.

Semi-Formal Pathway

Intent

The semi-formal curriculum provides a personalised learning experience for pupils with moderate to severe learning difficulties, bridging the gap between pre-formal and formal pathways. It aims to develop functional skills and independence while nurturing the child’s moral and spiritual journey.

The curriculum prioritises communication, literacy, numeracy, and life skills, rooted in Gospel values of kindness and respect. We seek to build resilience and motivation, ensuring pupils experience success and recognise their own dignity as learners.

Implementation

The curriculum balances personalised support with opportunities for independence. Teaching is practical and experiential, with lessons sequenced to consolidate prior learning.

Religious Education is adapted to be accessible and hands-on, allowing pupils to engage with Bible stories, liturgical seasons, and Catholic Social Teaching (e.g., caring for our common home). Teaching strategies include modelling and visual supports.

Impact

Impact is reflected in increased independence and the ability to apply skills across contexts. Pupils make measurable progress in communication and social interaction, showing an ability to build positive relationships based on Gospel values. They are prepared for the next stage of their education, equipped with the self-esteem that comes from knowing they have a purpose in God's world.

Formal Pathway

(Accessing the Primary National Curriculum)

Intent

The formal pathway provides a structured curriculum for pupils accessing the Primary National Curriculum who require a highly differentiated approach. It enables pupils to engage with subject-specific learning while developing the virtues and behaviours needed for future success.

Aligned with National requirements and the Catholic Education Service, the pathway prioritises academic progress alongside spiritual and emotional development. High expectations ensure all pupils are challenged to use their God-given talents to the best of their ability.

Implementation

The formal curriculum is delivered through a systematic approach underpinned by high-quality teaching and effective differentiation. The RE curriculum is a core subject, helping pupils to explore their faith and the faith of others.

Teaching strategies include explicit instruction and scaffolding. Communication and language development are embedded across all subjects. Pupils are encouraged to take on roles of responsibility (such as Prayer Leaders), fostering a sense of stewardship and service to the school and wider community.

Impact

The impact is seen in pupils’ progress across the National Curriculum and their growing independence. Pupils develop secure subject knowledge and the ability to apply their learning confidently.

Beyond academic achievement, pupils demonstrate improved social interaction and a commitment to the school’s Catholic ethos. They leave Guardian Angels well-prepared for the next phase of their education, equipped with the knowledge, skills, and faith-filled values needed to participate positively in society as "Children of the Light."
